The Brief
After recently moving to Broadway, near Ilminster, the clients wanted to extend their garden into a newly acquired plot behind the house. They had already worked with landscape designer Clare Challis to develop a clear vision for the space and were looking for an experienced hard landscaping team to deliver the build.
The site had been heavily overgrown and was cleared in advance, with waste removal, tree felling and pollarding already completed. With this groundwork done, the brief was to shape and structure the plot and create a practical, well-designed garden that would be ready for planting and long-term use.
The Plan
The agreed scheme involved carefully grading and levelling the plot before forming a series of new garden paths to connect the different areas. A fenced vegetable garden was created, complete with concrete bases for a greenhouse and shed, alongside the construction of a new pond and two dedicated seating areas.
Granite setts were used at the path junctions, with Ruishton cobbles laid in the patio areas. Oak sleepers and oak beams were installed to form the raised beds, patio edging and pergola. Large logs left over from the earlier tree pollarding were repurposed as stepping stones, creating a natural route from the raised bed area through to the pergola.
A large part of the plot was newly turfed, with additional turfing carried out near the house to extend the existing lawn. This created a seamless transition between the original garden and the newly developed space.
The overall aim was to deliver a functional, well-structured garden layout that provides strong foundations for future planting and use, while making the most of the newly available space.

Review
Greengage Garden Solutions have just successfully completed our complex project on time and within budget. Working with our garden designer, the team have transferred a sea of mud into the garden of our dreams in just eight weeks.
High levels of skill and extensive hands-on experience are matched by a creative approach to problem solving and a spectacular amount of sheer hard work. From paved areas to lawns, from making a wildlife pond to erecting an oak pergola, from a commitment to extensive preparation to a focused attention to detail – nothing has been too much trouble. The team always turned up on time and managed the logistics of deliveries and plant rentals without breaking stride. We were left fully informed throughout the process. Any changes or additions to the original detailed quote were discussed and confirmed in advance.
What could easily have been a stressful experience has turned out to be a pleasure from start to finish. We’re going to miss having them around!
