The brief
I was very inspired to get started on this particular project. The gentleman I was working for had Dementia and his wife had become his full time carer. Unfortunately, they’d been let down by builders and landscapers to the point where they were left with a bit of a building site. The year old fencing was leaning over and there was rubble everywhere and visible pipework. It was in complete disarray and dangerous. Particularly as it was gradually leaning into the stream at the bottom of the garden. This meant their garden was not a safe environment for either of them. We needed to help them and fast!
The lady of the house had some great ideas which we used in the final plans. The team and I then got together and planned the garden. They wanted a relaxing space with easy accessibility and quick completion.
The main tasks
We removed the block paving, rubble, ‘podium’, old shed, fencing, old pipe work, weeds and shrubs to create a blank canvas. We repurposed the old block paving bricks for the new stairs, not only kept costs down, but contrasted well with the new Garrowby limestone.
Because the couple loved to soak up the sun whenever possible, we put in 3 sections of patio seating to take advantage of the morning, midday and evening sun, whilst keeping all areas accessible. We added a low gradient path from one section to the next and ensured there were strong stainless steel hand rails for the new stairs up to the French doors. All of the fencing was replaced with heavy duty panels and posts. We added a new retaining wall by the stream and gate to aid the maintenance of this area. We installation a new side gate. Because of the previous flooding problems we installed a drainage system. Also we redirected the exposed overground washing machine pipe to a soakaway area deep underground. Finally, we freshened up the area with some new turf and planting.
Our clients were very happy with the results and we are extremely pleased for them that they can now relax and enjoy their garden.
